Born in Natchitoches, Louisiana, John Burns completed his undergraduate degree at Northwestern State University of Louisiana where he received a Bachelor of Science in biology with a minor in chemistry. John’s inspiration for becoming a Physician Assistant was his passion for helping people and the opportunity to study Dermatology.

After graduating from the Louisiana State University Health Science Center Physician Assistant Program in 2001 and working for the Dermatology service at the Overton Brooks VA Medical Center, he completed a Dermatology Physician Assistant fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern. He subsequently practiced Medical Dermatology for five years in Frisco, TX and eight years in Vancouver, WA. John’s parents, Tom and Abiah Burns, are originally from Reno and one of the primary reasons for his recent move to the area.

John’s primary dermatologic interest lies in evaluating skin lesions and rashes using dermoscopy – a technique that allows inspection of skin conditions unobstructed by skin surface reflections. He believes in an evidence-based approach to medicine and outside of work enjoys spending time with his family and furry friends.
